MS downloads fail - again
Hi, I've had to re-install X64 because a offline defrag corrupted my
installation. Now, once again, I can't download any files from Microsoft.
Nothing works, not validation, not MSN Messenger, none. I can go to any
other website and I have no problems, ATI, CT, Adobe etc. etc. etc. If you
can recall I have this problem before with X64 and it just seemed to clear
up. It's not my ADSL router, because both my wireless laptop and my other,
wired, desktop has no such problems.
Its rather weird...

9 in 1 Media card reader?
I have a client who went with a x64 system from my recommendation (Brave!)
and so far so good. I was worried about a Laserjet driver, but the LJ 5000
GN printer they have is supported natively by x64. Whew.
So now, their digicam software/driver is not compatible, and they prefer a
media reader anyway.
Anyone try, or know of a Half Height Internal or External USB card reader
that I can stick on this machine that has x64 drivers?
That way, they can read their CF/SM/MS/XD/MMS/ABC/DoReMe/FUD cards from
their digicams.
Thanks. Tag: IE32 on x64: Clear History doesn't work Tag: 21303

SQL 2005 64bits with 32 bits client application
Hello,
We want to add to our network a new SQL server 2005. Here are the
characteristics of this new server should has:
-Windows 2003 64 bits
-SQL server 2005 64 bits
-NET FrameWork 2.0 64 bits
-The network is at 1 Gbits/s
The stations are in Windows XP 32 bits. Some stations are still with Windows
2000. Framework 1.1 of NET 32 bits is also installed. A client application
developed with Visual Studio 2003 with FrameWork 1.1 is installed on each
station. At present, the application communicates with a SQL 2000 server
installed on a Windows 2000 server. If I connect my application towards my
new server, will I have modifications to make to my application or all
should function normally?
Hope that my question is clear
Thank you

Here's a silly question...
I'm aware that the 64-bit version of XP was built on top of the 2003+SP1
code base rather than XP+SP2, thus there is no service pack (yet) for XP x64
called "SP2"...or SP1 for that matter, as it's built-in...
But is there a service pack for the 64-bit version of 2003 itself? Or was
it also built from the (32-bit) 2003+SP1 code base?
I'm looking at my MSDN subscription DVDs, and the labels dosn't exactly make
it glaringly obvious...I have a 2003 DVD dating from June and another from
November--the only difference, according to the label, is the addition of
SP1 to the 32-bit version of 2003. But if the service pack for the 32-bit
version of 2003 wasn't on the June DVD, then I'm thinking surely that this
x64 image of 2003 dating from June doesn't have it either?
(this is a Monday morning question...I'm easily confused right now) ;-) Tag: IE32 on x64: Clear History doesn't work Tag: 21287
Can't Dual Boot XP Pro and XP x64! HELP...
I installed the Windows XP Pro on my patition C, everything is all setup,
then I install the Windows XP x64 on the patition D, after installation and
drivers setup, I tried to boot the 32bit Windows but doesn't work...(stay on
black screen and HDD keeps loading) waited around few minutes it said
"ntoskrnl.exe is missing...". So I use the 32bit Windows XP CD to boot into
the Repair Console and use FIXBOOT. Now I can boot the 32bit Windows XP,
however... listen... the problem is this time turns to the 64bit Windows XP
is unable to boot up...(stay on black screen and never say anything...) If I
fixboot the 64bit Windows then I can boot into the x64 but 32bit Windows
can't boot in after... How can I fix this problem? Tag: IE32 on x64: Clear History doesn't work Tag: 21270

Wanted: Howto on creating your own system-restore CD
I just had a minor disaster occurring here, day before yesterday, lost my
i-net connection, sound and the Win2K installation complained about the
RAID - gave me an excellent oportunity to try out the Restore-Point
facility. Going backwards, the three first attempts failed miserably, each
attempt consuming apprx. ½ hour, then the RP of the 20th, had everything up
and running within 2 minutes. 'nother days work and all is now O.K.
Wonderful thing, I must say. Not being a 'back-up guy', the experience have
left me wondering if there is not an easy option to this by having your own
CD. I have the ISO Recorder that was mentioned here a while ago - the one
that installs as an explorer extension, and although it is painfully simple
to look at, I am missing some kind of Help/Instruction to get started with
that one, but I would love to hear if other's have solved this matter in
other ways. Except for scheduled back-up'ing.
And I have Nero, to burn a back-up, but am not sure if this method can be
made to work as a Restore CD? It wouldn't have to be Bootable, nice if it
could, though, just so that everything essential to the installed system is
tucked away safely.

Reinstallation media for x64 and regular WinXP?
Hi,
I've just bought an Acer Ferrari 4005 that comes pre-installed with x64.
1. I'd like to dual boot the machine.
I understand that I'll need to reformat the drive, as x64 should be
installed on a different partition *after* installing regular Win XP.
Installation media was not provided. In the root of C:/ there are /i386 and
/amd64 folders. Can I make these into bootable CDs/DVDs or can I download
them from somewhere?
Alternatively, can I use the trial download of x64 with my current x64
product key? Where can I find a trial download of the regular Win XP, and can
I use the same x64 product key with it?
2. I'd like to use Norton Ghost.
The main reason for this reinstallation is because I want to run Norton
Ghost. Will version 9 be able to create proper images of the x64 partition
when running from regular Win XP?
I'd rather not have to go back to Acer for this ;)
Thanks,

Help diagnose flakey boot issue?
I've got a new XP box. About 3/4 of the time, it does not boot into
normal mode. Instead, you see the keyboard ack flash, the loading XP
msg, the screen blank, the loading XP msg, and the screen (and
keyboard) seem to go dead.
100% of the time, it can boot into Safe Mode (so, we're talking maybe a
h/w or s/w driver problem?)
If I try to bring it up in Boot Log or VGA mode, it dies as above.
Is there a way I can log the booting process to see where it's getting
hosed? If so, what do I need to do to turn it on and how can I get to
the log file?

requisite detective work? Tag: IE32 on x64: Clear History doesn't work Tag: 21108

Can I install Winxp64 on a Intel 915GEV motherboard with EMT64 CPU
Hi all,
I read the FAQ about Windows XP Pro 64bit and the answer to what computer
can run Windows XP 64Bit is as below:
Windows XP Professional x64 Edition is designed to work with 64-bit
processors from AMD and Intel that support the x64 extensions to the x86
architecture. These include the Athlon 64, Athlon 64 FX, Mobile Athlon 64,
Turion 64, and Opteron processors from AMD, and the Xeon with EM64T and
Pentium 4 with EM64T from Intel.
However Intel gives me an impression that I also need a EMT64 mother board
(such as 925X) to install a 64bit OS with the below statment
"The Intel 925X Express chipset is specifically designed to support Intel®
Extended Memory 64 TechnologyΦ (Intel® EM64T) enabling 64-bit memory
addressability."
I am confused because my motherboard is using the 915GEV chipset. Hope you
can help me clarify on this. Tag: IE32 on x64: Clear History doesn't work Tag: 21067

This is some serious freezing though - complete, no ctrl+alt+del, no nothing..
I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas, or experienced similar things?
the specs: Pentium 4 3.4, Asus motherboard, 1gb ram, nvidia 7800gtx, sata hd..
I'm actually considering installing win xp 32 just to see if it happens
there as well...
any thoughts would be appriciated!

Event viewer reports an WMI something error.
NForce 3 250 mobo (ASUS K8N) with NVidia based FX5200 graphics has same

NForce 3 250 mobo (same one) with ATI based 9600 graphis NO problem.
NForce 4 mobo (ASUS A8N-SLI) with NVidia based 6600 graphics NO problem.
Seems as if NForce 3 based mobos do not get along quite well with NVidias
own family of graphic cards.

Missing one half of CPU power!!!!
After some troubleshooting of a WIN XP 64 bit install, I run into a extremely
frustrating problem. After Windows is up and running, I lose half of my CPU
performance! I can't recall that it did this on the first boot to Windows,
but sooner
or later the same problem occurs. It is random as far as I can tell (once
started). It
and IE 64 bit or 32 bit may be related. I am on IE when it first occurs. But
regardles of what happens after that, it can't be stopped! The mouse becomes
sluggish, as well as Windows. When I Ctrl-Alt-Del to the windows task
manager, under the performance tab 50% of my CPU preformance is being used!
So, I switch to the processes tab to find and hopefully delete the culprit
when it reports 99% CPU performance is in the "System Idle Process". My CPU
runs at 100F or 38 C, so I pretty sure it should not be throttling. On top of
all of this, it is random in occurance: it goes on and off, lasts an hour or
30 seconds. My specs are below:
Here are my specs:
P4 3.73 Ghz 1066Mhz FSB
4GB 533 Mhz RAM
ABIT Fatal1ty AA8XE Mobo
2x 10K RPM (Raptors) by WD in RAID 0 of 70 GB each
1 7200 RPM 280 GB by Seagate
Included Realtek HD Audio card (daughter)
HIS Radeon X850 XT PE
My antivirus software is Avast! home edition, which is compatible for 64 bit
edition windows. It has a resident scanner for scanning whatever pages I load
on the internet. Also, I have Microsoft Antspyware Beta, could this be a
problem?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

IIS Question - ASP.NET 2.0
Below is a message I posted to the Windows general discussion group before

ASP.NET 2.0 pages?
I just installed Visual Studio 2005 and wanted to get cracking on learning
the dang thing for web development, and lo -- while IIS will open pages such
as 'iisstart.htm' and 'welcome.html', it will say it can't find files in the
same directory such as DEFAULT.ASPX seemingly because they have an ASPX
extension.
My best guess is it has something to do with adding a MIME type, but I don't

Internet Explorer - Stays in background or stops responding
Hi
I installed XP x64 edition on November 1st and have had this problem ever
since:
Internet Explorer often either:
(1) Freezes up entirely, or more often
(2) Goes in the background behind all other windows and there is no way to
bring it to the front.
Not sure of 32-bit or 64-bit internet explorer is running in each situation,
but I know most recently when I terminated a frozen internet explorer, task
manager's process tab referred to it as "IEXPLORE.EXE *32" so I presume it
was the 32-bit version in *that* situation.
Either Advice or shared horror stories are welcome.

player mode, Remote Assistance w/MSN Messenger, etc.), x64 may not be for
you at this time.
Probably good reading for a lot of newbies and fence sitters.

Tried to do a Clear History on my IE32 on x64, but it looks like not all,
or maybe not _at_ all, the history is cleared. Anybody else noticed this?
