    - X64Pro becomes unstable w open office I thought I would share this experience with you all since it took me a while to discover the problem. I have been using Open Office for months with no problem. Suddenly I could no longer open existing files or create new ones. It would go into a file recovery mode, recover a bogus file, send an error message to OO and start all over. I un-installed OO and reinstalled it with no change. I did a complete cleanup including removing directories, old files, registry entries, etc. Then I discovered I could not print from other applications, such as Firefox. I checked the printer icon and I could not access properties. I finally deleted the printer drivers, and reinstalled them. Then I reinstalled OO and it all works again. OO and other word processors need to know what printer is being used before it can format files to match that printer. Unfortunately is intolerant of the printer driver not being there and goes into this funky mode. I sent them a note. They need to do some defensive programing so that the application still runs without a printer and gives an appropriate error message that makes sense.     - Volume control in toolbar Because this is a ridiculous OS, I had to reinstall it. After that, however, I lost basic volume control in my toobar. When I tried to add it, the program wouldn't let me, instead giving me an error message that said "Volume control has not been installed." MS people told me to ask someone else.     - 64-bit print server causing problems with 32-bit workstations Hello, Due to a server move, I recently switched our print server from a 32-bit server to a AMD64 server. On some of the workstations now, we are unable to view the printer properties. I only get a message "Printer Properties can not be displayed. Operation could not be completed." The workstations this is happening on are the Windows 2000 computers, the XP computers work correctly. I was able to locate MS KB Article 908786, which describes this problem exactly. The problem is that the article says the problem occurs on Windows 2003, XP and 2000, but then provides resolutions (sort of) for Windows 2003 and XP only. It doesn't give any suggestions for Windows 2000 computers. All of the Windows 2000 computers are service pack 4 and updated with the most recent updates. We cannot update them to Windows XP as we are a school that relies heavily on donated computers and use the MS FreshStart program for our OS (they don't currently offer XP for the FreshStart program). We don't have the budget to purchase new OSes for all the computers. As the old server is being moved to a different campus, the only server we have available is the 64-bit one (and a workstation that has Windows Server 2003 installed on it, but it isn't capable of handling the extra burden (no matter how small is it) of being a print server). Does any one know of any hotfixes or patches or suggestions that I can try that will allow this print server to serve the needs of our old computers? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.     - How to install Xp Pro x64 using MSDN DVD packs. Hi! I just bought a new Campaq Presario V3149 AU with XP Media Center 2005 Installed. It has an AMD Turion 64 X2 processor. I need to use it for my development and also have MSDN subscription DVDs available with me. My question is i need to install Win XP pro x64 version on the laptop. How do I go about it? The MSDN DVD available with me (EN_OS_XP_2428.8) contains dump of 64Bit-x64 XP Pro software. But when i try to install it through the MSDN DVD available it does not take the x64 key during installation but instead is taking the 32-bit version's key. As I read through various articles, it seems that installing the x64 version is not the same as for 32 bit versions. Can someone help me out as to how to install the x64 bit version?     - Active X Hello all I have just reinstalled windows xp pro x64 edition back on my machine, it installs fine, asks me to activate windows, which always works, and alows me to download and install all the updates and sp2 . But the problem I am Having is when i go to download anything from microsoft for example defender x64 or media player x64 it fails on a active x problem then tells me that my windows is not activated, i then use there online validation to check, and that fails as well, even though it has activated, i have even checked the activation on the machine and that tells me it has activated Now i have been through there solutions and changed various settings, on there help pages regarding active x problems, i have tried reinstalling windows well over 5 times, even used another machine to totally clean and hard format, have used the full format option before installing, but i am still having problems.     - Memory for 64-bit OS's I'm thinking about upgrading my memory to 8Gb (from 4Gb). I have two choices available, both from Corsair. One set has memory timings of 5-5-5-15 and the other 5-5-5-18 and I could save myself around Â£45 (~$90) by going for the slightly slower timings.     - Update history I had a driver that I installed myself, and the driver was still on the download list in the vista x64 update list when I clicked on check for updates. I thought it was going to update the existing driver I had installed, but it was left over from when it was not installed. I guess that you must check for udates again after instaling drivers or software to avoid this. Does anyone know of a way to delete failed download entries in the download history list in vista x64?     - 64-bit dual core: vista business x64 or XP Pro x64? Hi! I'm having a hard time understanding the different capabilities of the various Windows versions for 64-bit support. I have a license for both XP Pro x64 and Vista business x64. Which utilizes a dual- core x64 processor better? Do applications have to be specifically written to utilize a dual-core x64-bit OS in both XP and Vista? I'm thinking Vista is better at uilizing my CPU's full capabilities despite whether the app is written for x32 or x64, am I right?     - DVD/CD Drive problem I have wiped my hard drive clean, and started over with an xp pro x64/vista home premium dual boot, every time I do this I go back and follow my install notes I made the last time, and every time I do the same as last, and still end up running into problems. This time, I installed about 5 times before I found out what does not work this week with windows. Any way I am down to my last problem, When I first install edthe xp x64 onto partition 1 everything was a.o.k. and after I got done installing everything, that I downloaded, and put on from a few disks, I noticed that when I put a dvd, or cd in any opticial drive (I have 4) the window that pops up has no options in it, and is blank. I can only click at the bottom on ok, or cancel. usualey the window has things like play cd with media player, play dvd with media player, or nero, etc, etc. What gives, How do I get this lovely option to come back to my o.s. to stay for a while? Hello, I deleted some drivers, which were reported in event log to be not loaded because of compatibility problems, however it now turns out they were needed after all !     - Bit the bullet-now what? Well, I did it. Ordered a 15" 2.33 GHz Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro with the big hard drive this morning. If it isn't here by my birthday I'll pull out my printed copy of the order to look at while I blow out the candles. So now the question is: By which rituals and through how much sacrifice do I appease the Redmond gods for this transgression sufficiently to set this thing up with its native OS and 64-bit Vista in a dual-boot config, and maybe a 32-bit version to run in a virtual machine for when I have real work to do? That sounds like the best option to me right now. I'm not so much interested in the nuts and bolts at this point as I am in how many licenses/copies I have to buy and from whom. From what I've read here I'm figuring I'll need two-one each for the 64-bit and 32-bit versions. Could I get either or both via download, or will brick and mortar be part of the equation? Mind you, I'm not here to defend the logic of any of this. I went through all that when I didn't get the pony I asked for as a little boy. Now, at long last, I'm getting even. Assuming it's a 32-bit dll, I tried running with "Enable32BitAppOnWin64" - with no success. It just shuts down the application pool and throws a "Service Unavailable" message (and logs a few W3SVC Event 1039's to the System log). Is there an x64 version of this dll floating around somewhere? Or something else I can try to get it to run under WOW64?     - windows server 2003 64 bit cdrom drivers corrupt our backup server has windows server 2003 64 bit sp2 set to receive security updates automatically, and recently the driver for its DVD RW (pioneer dvr 110) doesnt work, the drive no longer appears in windows explorer or in control panels disk management. The drive does appear at boot up as an IDE device and just to test it I booted successfuly from it with the wondows installation disc, so I am sure there is no hardware problem. In device manager the IDE motherboard driver is ok but the DVD driver has a yellow check "windows couldnt load this device, the driver may be corrupt or missing) refreshing the driver, uninstalling and reinstalling it, removing the IDE cable from it, rebooting several times and reconnecting it gave the same result, windows update cant find a better driver than the corrupt one! Pioneer doesnt have any drivers they say they should be in the operating system. Anyone else had this problem? I connected a lite on DVD ROM, same thing happened.     - applied SP2, now can't paste I use my 2003 X64 primarily as a Terminal Server. Last night I applied the SP2 and now I find that after I copy to my local machine (XP) clipboard, when I flip over to the terminal session I no longer have the option to Paste.     - Startup I have a new laptop (HP dv9000 with Intel Centrino Duo x64 2.0 with 2 GB RAM, 512MB nVidia Video, 200 GB drive). I'm running Vista Ultimate. This was suppose to be my 'dream machine'. I really looked forward to the day when I finally got to bring it home. I have MS Office 2007 and Zune software installed, but that's basically it. I used offline files in the past (in the first few weeks I had the laptop) to sync a network drive which contained all my media files. After starting my laptop I would basically have to walk away for an hour while it ran at 100%. Using ProcMon I discovered it was the offline files that caused my CPU to run so hard and have since disabled the service. However, I still have to wait anywhere between 10 - 15 minutes before my laptop really becomes usable after booting up. I even have to wait sometimes 5 minutes or more when shutting down for the process to complete. What's with all the wait time? I can't figure out all these services that run that are suppose to make my computing experience better. I have several svchost processes that run. One of these takes up 140 MB of memory alone. When it comes to performance, why can't I have one control panel that allows me to choose which services I want to run that may effect the performance of my machine?
