Suddenly, my 2 IDE CD drives are no longer recognized in XP64 and showing up
yellow in Device Manager. When I try to reinstall the drivers it tells me I
already have them. They show up in CMOS though.

I tried uninstalling the 2 drives and then on reboot, they are still
yellowed out. They both work fine under 32-bit WinXP (dual-boot). They
used to work fine. This has me buffaloed over here. I searched this forum
for anything on CD/DVD drives and found nothing, so I'm asking.

ASUS K8V SE Deluxe mobo with 512MB PC3200
WD 160 GB HD.

If you can do a system restore. As an alternate you can do what I did and
look in your system logs and find out what error messages you have and then
edit the registry to eliminate the references in the registry to items in
the log entries. Sounds like you uninstalled or installed some software
that affects the cd's.

Hello
Check to see if there are any filter drivers that are attached to the
drivers.
in Device manager, right-click on the device displaying yellow.
Choose properties
Choose details
Locate Device upper and lower filters and Class upper and lower filters.
What are on each of these items?
These are the filter drivers that are attached to the drivers for devices.
So these can affect the driver loading.
Thanks,
Darrell Gorter[MSFT]

System Restore did the trick. We're back in business.
Seems that trying to install Tuneup2006 trial version caused the glitch.
Restored back before that and it worked. THANKS JOHN BARNES & DARRELL

You can use regedit and do a search on the filter names. From there you can
either remove the name from the data area or delete the filter entry. Mine
worked fine removing the filter registry entry, but ALWAYS back up any
registry entry you are going to modify or delete before you do it, or back
up the whole registry.

Hello ,
John is correct in backing these up. You need to be careful in removing
the entries.
You should try to uninstall the application or driver that installed the
filter driver.
Just removing the filter driver can cause other problems if the underlying
application or driver that installed them has dependancies on that filter
being present.
Thanks,
