Background: Bought an HP 3500N last fall, to use in our server room.
Status: Useless when attached to server. HP cannot provide a good x64
driver, even though all sales materials claim x64 is supported.
Multiple calls to HP support over a four month period yield no joy.

Contrary to what HP says or publishes on the support site, x64 color LJ
drivers are still in beta, and DO NOT WORK.

Combine that with no good DVD burning s/w for backups being available and
you have a really "red-headed stepchild" of a product.

What is the big push to 64bit computing being driven by...besides MS desire
to sell another product?

The same as the push from 16 to 32 bit...performance. But I for one hope it
happens faster than with 64 bit than the afore mentioned example.

Performance will be basically the same on x64 as on XP if you're running 32
bit apps. But the speed increase is substantial when running 64 bit apps.
Half-Life claims an 84% speed increase when running their 64 bit version of
Steam over the 32 bit version. Games seem to be jumping on the 64 bit wagon
quicker than business apps at this point, but that will be changing. And I
hope MS pushes it. It's overdue.

And your beef should be with HP, not with MS.

Why does everybody blame MS when third party vendors don't produce drivers?
It's the same old "Hate Bill" mantra...

Microsoft has done virtually nothing to sell the product or get it accepted
by the market place.

Nero works just fine for burning, have you tried it?

Its strange, it seems to be selling itself though. It would be nice to see a
couple ads in PC World or PC Magazine about it though, just at least inform
John Public that there is such an edition of Windows XP. :)

Roxio does, their 8.5 version runs just fine on both XP x64 and 2k3 x64, as
I use it almost daily on both.

No, I don't want that, and I don't think MS does. At this point, the problem
MS has is that people who should NOT be getting x64, are having it foist on
them by OEMs. Most people would be a far better fit for 32-bit Windows. Keep
in mind something that I've said from day one - x64 is _not_ for everyone.
There's a very good reason there isn't a retail version. Until there are
sufficient drivers it just isn't a good fit. And MS really had no way to
enforce drivers onto IHVs in the XP time frame - the rules for logos were
already cast in stone. But the rules for Vista will be far different and
will drive the adoption, IMHO.

Same situation here.

My HP color laserjet 3500n is useless. The same for all my others HP
laserjets except 1200.

Let's be focused to HP and its online promises to deliver drivers (p.e.
universal print driver) on September, November, January and now on April
2006 (or 2007 ?).

I can not understand why HP makes public announcements about drivers
availability while is not able or interested to develop them.

True, but don't you think you would be educating the Public better? Remember
the Windows 2000 Professional ads - the reliable operating system for

Windows XP Professional - the reliable operating system for lots of number

Me, for all it's faults, was released as a Retail OS. Separate and distinct
from Win98. XP x64 is not retail, and is XP, not some new OS. Thus the
problems with logo. Though again, this is purely my speculation - as we all
know, I don't work for MS and certainly don't control the process.

Well, much has been said in here about lack of drivers for Win64... but I
think the goal MS was aiming at was "greasing the gears" in prep for the
release of their real 64bit OS to follow later this year, Vista. E.G., XP
Pro (and to lesser extent, Server 2003) 64bit wasn't expected to take off in
a commercially-successful launch; it was released in stable but largely
un-useful form to whet the public appetite, like a marketing ploy, which
would then drive manufacturers to write and release the necessary 64bit
drivers for hardware (and updates to software by various vendors) in
response to end user outcry. The resulting, apparent "market-driven" change
costs MS less and nets them more in the end... and make them appear to lead
the information age in technological advances.

Ever thought about that it's simply _YOUR_ mistake?

Maybe I'm wrong, but I never found any remark that the HP Color Laserjet
3500N is supported by Windows x64. And a short look at HPs driver
download site for the Color Laserjet 3500 shows no x64 drivers, either:

<http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/DriverDownload.jsp?locale=en_US&pnameOID=315867&taskId=135&prodTypeId=18972&prodSeriesId=315862&submit.y=0&submit.x=0&lang=en&cc=us>

BTW: the drivers for "Microsoft Windows XP 64-Bit Edition" _DO_ work
fine - on the system they are intended for (Itanium). Simply because
"Microsoft Windows XP 64-Bit Edition" (which is already out since 2001
btw) is for ia64 and not x64 (which is "Microsoft Windows XP x64
Edition"). Of course the Itanium drivers don't work with x64 computers,
as HP already states in the driver download description:

<http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=18972&prodSeriesId=315862&prodNameId=315867&swEnvOID=1026&swLang=8&mode=2&taskId=135&swItem=lj-16866-2>

"This download is only for Windows "Itanium" edition. It will not work
on "XP Professional x64 operating systems."

I couldn't find any x64 drivers for the 3500N at all.

BTW: I have an old HP Color Laserjet 4500. It works fine with the
drivers that already come with XP x64.

Nero 6.6.0.18 (which is quite old) already worked fine with Winxp x64 as
