Forgotten Administrator Password
I built a HTPC with XP Pro x64 Edition as thge OS. I had problems finding
Internet Security software and a wireless card. BitDefender had a beta
version and Abit had a PCI-E card. I had to find an antenna with a longer
lead. It took a while to locate one. I did not write down my Administrator
password so now I cannot get on the PC. Is there anything I can do short of
wiping the HD and reinstalling? How about the product key? Thanks.

MultiBoot with Vista Home Premium 64 & 32bit versions
I have recently purchased PC with quad core 2.4ghz, 4gb ram , 2 x 400gb
Samsung SATA drives. The bootable drive has a 10gb hidden partition (used for
restoring operating system).
The PC has Vista Home premium 64bit installed. As some of my software that I
regularly use does not run in 64bit I wish to install Vista Home premium
32bit as a multiboot.
After reading FAQs etc i am confused. Some seem to suggest that earliest
version of Windows must be installed 1st..others say doesn't matter. Which
version is earlist or does it matter.
How do i go about it, especially as there is the hidden Partition? Tag: Avast Antivirus updated to v4.7.1074 Tag: 52589

Vista 64 - Incomplete booting after increasing RAM
I increaased the RAM on my system from 1GB to 3 GB. The sticks are 2 1 GB
sticks and 2 512 MB sticks. As long as I keep the 2- 1GB sticks installed
Vista will not Boot completely. First It will take about 15 minutes to get
to the user selection window. Then after selection the boot process will
only go to the opening window with a gray portion showing where the task bar
would be located and the rest of the screen black. I will get a dialog
stating the Windows Explorer is not responding. It also offers two choices
Close the program
Wait for the program to respond.
I first tried to wait for the program to respond. After a half an hour I
figured it wasn't going to so I rebooted and went through the tedious boot
process again. When I got the Dialog again I selected close the program.
This time, a few seconds later, a still picture of my usual moving pictire
screen appeared. However nothing else could be done.
I did remove one of the 1 - GB sticks and the system seemed to boot
normally. I also checked if the BIOS recognized the new memory and it did.
The problem appears to begin after I get the initial moving bar at the
beginning of the windows boot process. Tag: Avast Antivirus updated to v4.7.1074 Tag: 52532
System Restore is not working due to RPC server error
Hi,
I have a problem with my Vista x64 installation. Something happened on my
system that lets 'System Protection', 'Backup and Restore center' and 'System
Restore' fail with te following message: "The transfer syntax is not
supported by the RPC server. (0x800706C2)"
I would like to revert to an earlier restore point but unfortunately this
problem prevents System Restore from working at all.
I post the message here because after some digging I found out that the
message has something to do with a 64bit (ndr64) RPC client trying to access
a 32bit (dce) RPC server? Suggesting some 64bit component got replaced by a
32bit one?
Any help would be much appreciated. Because the only other solution I see
now is to reinstall my system.

Applications fail to load after chkdsk auto repair
My system with raid5 disks(3disks) 'crashed' yesterday while I was using
Internet Explorer 6, visiting some dynamic/ajax enabled webpage, and clicking
on an ajax enabled button. Trust me when I say it was this one that locked up
my pc this way. Not that worse that I lost all my precious data... some tough
luck huh :D
I had to manually turn my pc off and turned it on again. After BIOS, the
raid controller/bios came with its errors. I skipped the error message and
started to boot xp. Chkdsk ran and recovered some free disk space (here the
mess really begins, as I would find out afterwards).
The problem now is, when I startup my pc, I get stuck with many applications
that try to startup, but all fail and error. All seem to be related to COM
errors(? as far as I understand the next errors).
- skype gives something with ole errors
- winrar never opens up nor giving an error message visually
(but it does in eventvwr - application - eventid 1000, and with file
kernel32.dll)
- winvnc gives a dozen or even a few dozens of errormessages every 2-3 secs
after login with rpcrt4.dll, and another app as well...
These are the noticeable errors. In eventviewer I found some more errors,
most userevnt 1000 errors. Some application errors that popup also show "The
exception unknown software exception (0xc0000005) occured in the application
at location 0x2d828acd ... ", as Adobe acrobat did. And if I start MS Word
'03, it says something like "...documents cannot be linked this time..." and
locks up.
I believe chkdsk shouldn't free up that used disk space. This because I
think it was partially pointing to data on the erroring raid5 disk. My
suggestion to MS is, -if winxp can see that a RAID is giving errors- that
chkdsk should not run after a one-raid5-disk-failure or a RAID degredation.
Or else showing by default a message at auto chkdsk, with: "cancel chkdsk if
you having RAID errors".
Another possibility of the error(my actual problem) is it was created by the
pc lockup where it all started. But there was no disk activity during manual
shutdown, so...
And another possibility is that one special website can lock my browser / pc
up, -possibly- since the latest software changes:
Some software changes which -might- have messed with my internet explorer:
The latest software change I initialized was installing a .net mobile
application devtoolkit, a .net sdk(v2.0 64bit), ASP.NET Futures July
2007(v1.2.61025), and a fix for asp.net framework v2.0.50727 (I can't find
the fix version/name). This all around the 18th of October. I had the system
lockup one time before, but managed to kill internet explorer and I could go
on using my system. That was a few days before this happened, and... at the
same website(tweakers.net, dutch site) with it's ajax enabled stuff.
Last possibility is: the raid striping over the three disks was making a mess.
Some error info about the raid array:
One disk ended up with 'error' in nvidia mediashield (got an nforce4 chipset
with raidcontroller), but healthy and the other 2 disks were 'degraded', but
also healthy. This was right after the first reboot and chkdsk. Almost the
same message was provided after BIOS by the raid controller (= before winxp
boot). After rebuilding the RAID, nothing really changed, except the
degradation was gradated again.
Sorry for this huge explanation of my problem, but I wanted to give all the
details so it could be used to possibly prevent this kind of problems in the
future with RAID's, chkdsk by-design-flaws, Internet Explorer/.Net/Ajax or
whatever contributed to my problem.
But if someone could tell me how to recover (for free, don't going to pay
for anybody's bugs) the chkdsk erasing action and/or how to normally use all
my apps again without any windows or app reinstall, I would be very pleased.
Kind regards,
Michael Ponsteen

Windows Support Tools
I'm using XP Home Addition, but felt my problem would be answered better in
this group. I was looking around on my HD and saw a folder C:\Bundle, so I
clicked on it. There were two folders in it titled "support" and "valueadd".
I clicked on the "support" folder, which went to "tools" and then there was a
few files. I clicked on the "suptools" file (Window Installer) and up came a
MS Install Wizard. I had two choices in the installer of a "typical" and
"complete" install. I decided to do a restore point just in case something
went wrong, so I canceled out and made the restore point. Then I went back
and did the "typical" install. After looking through what got installed it
became apparent this was meant for XP Pro and/or XP-64 and at levels beyond
what I would use. There was no "un" install feature nor a Control Panel
entry to remove what I just had installed. I went to System Restore and
found that installing the Support Tools created it's own restore point and
removed "all" previous restore points that were there before I did the
install. I clicked on the restore point and after trying there was a message
that my PC could "not" be restored to that point. It appears that everything
is working OK so far, but I'd like to remove the Support Tools since I won't
ever be using any of them. It put all of the apps in C:\Program
Files\Support Tools. I'm sure there are register entries and such that got
installed; is there anyway to remove what got installed "completely" as an
"un" install feature would do ?? If not, will my PC suffer any ill effects
from having installed these tools. Thanks in advance. Tag: Avast Antivirus updated to v4.7.1074 Tag: 52460
Cannot detect second hard drive after upgrade to Win XP 64-bit
Hello,
I recently upgraded my computer with a new motherboard and processor, but I
kept my original two hard drives (one primary, one slave). Once the
motherboard and processor was installed, I reinstalled windows xp. Prior to
the upgrade I was running windows xp professional (32-bit) and decided to
upgrade to windows xp professional (64-bit). During setup windows was able
to see both hard drives. Windows was installed on the primary hard drive.
Naturally, I had to reformat my primary hard drive, the second hard drive was
not formatted. After installation I can only see the primary hard drive
(C:). There is no icon or drive letter for the second hard drive (which
should be labeled E:). I can see the drive in "device manager" and "computer
management" but I cannot assign a drive letter. As far as I know, the hard
drive and cables are functioning. Why can't I access my second/slave hard
drive? Do I have to reformat the drive and lose all of my saved information? Tag: Avast Antivirus updated to v4.7.1074 Tag: 52445

Logitech Setpoint on Vista 64, install solution
I had a problem installing Logitech Setpoint 64 bit Vista version.
Whilst I had searched the Logitech site for solutions none of them
worked, I have found the cause and the solution ... this should even
apply to some other software installations on Vista.
Problem: Logitech Setpoint 4.0 for 64Bit Vista will not complete the
installation.
Cause: Admin rights not applied to the "correct" executable, due to
unzipping of files to temp dir.
Solution:
1) Run the Logitech Setpoint installer as Administrator
This will unzip the actual installation files to a temp folder within
C:\Users\UrUserName\AppData\Local\Temp\
2) Locate the real installation files (search for setup.exe within the
above folder) mine was called "pft3786.tmp" - within this folder are
the actual set up files.
3) Run the Setup.exe in this folder AS ADMINISTRATOR and the software
will install correctly.
Hope this helps anyone with similar install problems. Tag: Avast Antivirus updated to v4.7.1074 Tag: 52392

A clock interrupt was not received on a secondary processor within
Hi Guys,
Am an experienced system builder, and former software dev MVP.
Recently put together a machine;
E6700 Quad Core CPU
Abit AW9D-Max Motherboard
2GB of PC8500 RAM
ATI Radeon X1800 XL
etc.
I have installed Windows Vista Ultimate 64bit. I am getting random BSODs and
reboots. I'm getting a comination of stop codes. Usually it's
'A Clock interrupt was not received on a secondary processor within the
allocated time interval'
Sometimes it's 0x0A IRQL_NOT_LESS_THAN_OR_EQUAL, but usually it's 0x0101
So, for example;
0x00000101, 0x000...030, 0x000...0, 0xFF..., 0x000...03
0x00000101, 0x000...030, 0x000...0, 0xFF..., 0x000...02
or
0x0000000A, 0x000...030, 0x000...C, 0x000...01, 0xFF....
I have swapped out the memory with known good memory. I have updated the
motherboard BIOS to its latest version. I have tried both the latest graphics
drivers from ATI and the default Microsoft drivers that Vista installs. The
machine is not overheating. The built-in memory tester in windows ran the
tests without issue. The machine seems to behave itself while running in Safe
Mode.
Loading the game 'World of Warcraft' can cause it to crash very quickly -
but sometimes I can get a few minutes out of the game. Opening apparently any
other game will not cause the machine to crash.
Any thoughts?

R2 (x86) to Windows 2003 R2 (x64). Now I am having a few problems but one of
my biggest problems right now stems from my printers. I am unable to add the
printers via Print Management. This is because HP in all their wonderful
wisdom does not make a x64 bit driver disk. Don't ask me why. They only
offer it in a downloadable package. Problem is this is not a .zip file which
would make sense. It is a .exe install program. Now I have been on the
phone with HP for days and have cursed them out for not having a .zip file of
the drivers. The install package will not make it through the install
process because it is stupid and is looking for 2 things, the printer to be
hooked up via USB, which they aren't because they are network printers, and a
temp folder that self-implodes as soon as the install program makes it. So
their program is hosed and I let them know that. So my question is does
anyone know away around this to add the x64 bit drivers, without having to
use their stupid program? Tag: Avast Antivirus updated to v4.7.1074 Tag: 52373
How to get back to Administrator login
Hi group,
I have using the default Administrator login for quite some time. Once I
created a user account, the Administrator account is gone for the login
screen. Reviewing the help file I see the default Administrator account is
intended for the set-up purposes.
My question is how do I login to my Administrator account?
Thanks in advance,

Att. John Barnes!
John,
I remember you used to be on a Modem Connection - apparently, you have got
yourself something else since. What is that?
Here, in Denmark the Power Service Distributors have started putting
Broadband onto their power lines, it just needs 'copper', as I understand.
I am about to be fed-up with the big city life and may seek out some
property out in the big forrests somewhere and would like to gather some of
the options in advance - I understand you are living in a not so densely
populated area yourself?

Cannot run x86 programs
Ok, so this is a weird one. It just sort of started happening out of
the blue. My computer gets an IP just fine, but when I attempt to
connect to the internet it won't connect. I did some troubleshooting
and found that I was also having an issue with windows media player
and my antivirus (nod32) crashing. I played around a little more and
found that the x64 versions of these programs worked just fine. I am
able to get online using the x64 version of IE, and my media player
doesn't crash when using the x64 version. Now obviously since the x86
versions are the defaults this causes some issues and most programs
don't see that they are connected to the internet (AIM, Gtalk, etc). I
consider myself fairly well versed in Vista and I have no idea what to
do with this one. Anyway, let me know what you think. Thanks! Tag: Avast Antivirus updated to v4.7.1074 Tag: 52355
CMD Prompt Powertoy using the registry
I've found these two simple registry modifications in order to allow the
right-click menus of:
"Open Elevated Command Prompt Window Here as Administrator"
http://www.mydigitallife.info/2007/10/18/open-elevated-command-prompt-window-here-as-administrator-at-current-folder-directly-in-vista-windows-explorer/
and
"Run Command Prompt Window as Administrator"
http://www.mydigitallife.info/2007/10/17/run-command-prompt-window-as-administrator-by-right-click-computer-in-vista/
Maybe it is a little OT but someone may find the info, and the reading,
useful.

Is using 32-bit appz on x64 better than on x86?
Hi,
I went x64 because of the benefits found in one of the major programs I was
using. As it turns out, problems with plugins means I will be using the
32-bit version of this program on my x64 installation.
In fact, most everything installed on my computer is 32-bits, because of
various conflicts and problems. Am I better off switching back to XP x86, or
sticking with with x64 and continuing to use 32-bits appz on it?
Am I doing more harm than good hanging on to x64 when I'm not really using
anything 64-bits? Tag: Avast Antivirus updated to v4.7.1074 Tag: 52331

Is it possible to change from 64bit to 32bit Vista?
Hi.
I've bought Vista Home Premium 64bit, and tried it on my computer. But what
I've learned is that some of the programs I need to use due to mye
educational program doesn't support 64bit Vista. So, I wondered if it was
possible to switch over to 32bit Vista without buying a brand new Vista
product, which I just recently did(64bit).
Thanks,

Accessing files Problem
I have a server with windows server 2003 and other pcs are connected through
a domain with the server. I had to format one of the pcs and installed win xp
prof again. The problem is this when the user logs in with the password that
he had he cant create/delete folder in ( example program files ) because
error access dnied is given. I have checked the other pcs and found out that
when a user logs in on another computer that he usually dont use the same
thing happens.
Note:When an administrator password is used everything can be accessed but
when a different account is used on another computer that a person dont use
the access denied msg appears.
Can someone help me out with this please. Tag: Avast Antivirus updated to v4.7.1074 Tag: 52297
