    - Tyan K8WE (2895) 8800 GTX Windows x64 I just added an MSI 8800 GTX video card to my Tyan K8WE (2895) system running Windows x64. I had to upgrade the BIOS of the motherboard to 1.04a (beta) to support the video card, and I am running the new nVidia beta drivers for the 8800 GTX in x64. Some gamess will not work correctly, and some stuff will not install. For example, I can not install the new Futuremark 1.10. I was just wondering whether others are having similar problems.     - Is there any way I can make my new X64 machine dual boot with the 'old' drive from my ME machine IE I have built a brand new X64 computer but am having trouble getting some SCSI scanners working I have already put the old computer drive in the system as well to access the data on it, is there any way I can retrospectivley make it dual boot with the ME system that if already on the old disc.     - Something is hijacking explorer Why does it just so happen that i have to reinstall Vista RC1 every three days? Because on the third day, every time the computer is started, it renders itself unusable by way of 100% CPU usage. I finally checked on the problem, using sysinternal process explorer, and sure enough, explorer.exe takes up 90% of the CPU. It only starts doing this after about three days. Everytime the computer starts it automatically gets slammed to 100% usage, and this is an AMD Athlon 64, not some junk. After about twenty minutes explorer.exe will calm down to 4% like it should, until i open any folder then it shoots right back up to 100%. It is NOT hardware related as it works fine for three days. My index rating is 4.1 and all drivers are updated and perfect, so there is no way it is hardware related. Any one else having this explorer.exe problem?     - upgrading to vista... but... I have win xp pro x64, and have had a few problems, mainly freezes and lack of printer drivers etc.. I was thinking to upgrade to vista and I have a few questions: 1 is the 64 bit vista a much-improved version and am I going to have the same problems? 2 can I upgrade to 32-bit vista and avoid some of these problems. 3 off topic slightly, but is it possible for me now to install win xp pro (32 bit) on my system and have a dual boot option?     - Vista x64 and XP Media Center X86 Bought AMD Athlon 64 system with XP Media Center installed ( X86 version). Setup new partition and intsalled Vista X64. IT installed fine and noticed other MS operating system. When I try to boot the XP x86 Media Center I get a missing file or corrupted file -- <windows root>\system32\hal.dll Any suggestions ? -- How to get X64 Vista to boot manage X86 XP Media Center?     - Odd reboot on start-up (but fixed) I haven't used my x64 for a week, and this morning I was booting it, and it came to the section after where you see the Windows-logo, and then popped-up a message for a split-second, and rebooted again, doing the same thing over and over. The message said something about lsass.exe and password. So I wanted to log-in via the Recovery Console, but could not log-in there, because the Admin password was wrong. Odd, as I had not changed it. So I went searching for ways to reset the password, and one was to delete the SAM-files in system32/config. I booted from x32, went to the x64 partition, and oddly enough I noticed the file called "security" was living twice in that folder, but one was called "securXXX", where the XXX where some Chinese characters. I renamed the one called "security" to "security.org" and in the other one removed the Chinese characters and changed them to "ity", reboot, and hey presto, working again :-D It might have been a corrupt disk, or corrupt FAT or something. I ran a chkdsk, but it did not find any problems. So, my problem got fixed, but I thought I would just share it with you. I wish all those celebrating the upcoming one, a Happy New Year!!!!     - System freezes Hi I have 2 recurring problems: [1] I will be working on the pc, mostly browsing or using other apps, and suddenly the machine freezes and every time I need to reboot. I am running windows xp x64. I have tried searching he new for answers.. but not much luck. How can I check driver compatibility? Is there freeware I can downlaod that will do this for me or diagnose the problem? Could it be software? [2] Whne I reboot, my machine frequently fails to reboot, so I have to press the power off/on key to get it to shut down and then press again to get it to boot (and that is not always successful).     - gdi32.dll program hang (the ghost in the machine) I've got this periodic problem with gdi32.dll on X64 (AMD 64 4400 ). Every once in a while, my PC gets in this mode where three programs (Open Office Calc, Photoshop 6, and Vuescan) crash. Only Photoshop 6 gives me the clue that the problem is due to gdi32.dll. Two questions: 1) <http://securitydot.net/vuln/exploits/vulnerabilities/articles/18330/vuln.html> claims there is a potential to create a DOS attack using gdi32.dll. Now I'm not running a server, and I am behind a firewall router, but any chance there is a virus in gdi32. 2) I've been waiting for sp2 to be released. What are the risks of installing the beta.     - Installing xp professional x64 edition 180 day trial software i've been struggling with trying to get xp professional x64 edition on my 64 bit computer for 4 months now without success.. it goes through copying files on my new hard drive, restarts and then a light blue screen comes on that says setup must restart, screen then goes black and then there is hard drive activity for close to 10 minutes and then nothing. restarting computer doesnt help, same result with or without setup disc in drive.     - Express Upgrade to Vista 64bit Hi I`m contemplating buying the Windows XP 64-bit version from komplett.co.uk which includes an upgrade coupon to Vista when its released. My understanding is if you buy Windows XP 64-bit you get an upgrade to 64-bit Vista Business. I have one question however I`m buying a new CPU/Motherboard around the same time and I might get the CPU from komplett at the same time. Does this qualify me as an "authorised system builder" or is this offer only available to dell, HP etc in which case why are komplett selling these operating systems to Joe Bloggs with upgrade coupons which could be useless? Anyone know the exact truth about this can I build a home PC with a new CPU bought from the same place as the Windows XP 64bit with upgrade coupon and does the e-reciept of this qualify me as an "authorised system builder" or do I have to be Dell, HP Acer etc It says Windows XP 64-bit has to be preinstalled by the system builder ie me in order to qualify for the upgrade but that is no problem obviously .     - x64 fast outbound - slow inbound net traffic I have a GA K8N-SLI mobo using x64, all patches, latest GA and NVidia drivers. Somewhere along the way the network has been damaged so that transfers outbound to an XPX86 system run at full speed, but transfers back run at roughly 10% of the outbound (100base) xfer rate. Using the X64 system, VOIP speed tests on the ADSL report 234 kbps up, but only 225 kbps down on the 1500 mbps link. The X86 system gets close to full bandwidth on the ADSL in both directions, and has a K8N-9 mobo, so it looks like the X64 system. I have switched out the firewall-routers and the ADSL modem without change in behavior, I have also used the tweakers to set XP buffer sizes - while the buffer sizes make modest improvements it still is not close to being "right." I also occassionally get the network "disconnected" followed immediately by a "connected" message. Since the reconnect is instantaneous it is an annoyance rather than a problem. I uninstalled the nVidia firewall; uninstalled all the nVidia drivers via control panel, and reinstalled the latest nVidia drivers without the firewall.     - Dual boot with windows XP Pro 64 Bit and Vista Ultimate 32 Bit I have a Dell Inspriron E1705 Desktop running Intel Duo 2 Core T2500 at @2.00 GHz with 2 Gig of memory. The hard drive is 91.75 GB. When it came from Dell, it had a 47 MB EISA Configured partition for Dells' diagnostic tools, a 4.93 GB Primary partition with Dells disk restoration program and the remaining 86.5 GB was in a primary partition. I spilt the primary partition into a 39. GB Primary partition for Windows XP PRO Media Center 2005 and a 47.5 GB logical partition onto which I installed Windows Vista Ultimate RC2. I am quite happy with the way Vista Ultimate performs on the laptop. I did not think to download the 64 bit version when it was available, so I've downloaded the trial version of Windows XP Pro 64 Bit and would like to install it on the partition that currently holds XP Pro Media Center, replacing Media Center with XP Pro 64 bit. I want to see how a 64 bit OS works on the laptop before Vista becomes available to the public. If I format the 39 GB primary partition which holds Media Center to install XP 64 Bit, will I loose the capability to boot into Vista on the logical partition? From what I've read on these news groups, I can not "upgrade" to XP 64 Bit, but must do a clean install. If I do loose the ability to boot to Vista after the format of the primary partition, can I do a repair using the RC2 DVD to restore the boot files? Thanks in advance for any help. So they took what must be for them a tried and tested route; they get at you by subversion of those around you. Since they wouldn't be able to do that with my family or friends, that meant getting at people in the workplace to be their mouthpieces and do their dirty work for them. They supplied my employers in Oxford with details from what was going on in my private life, and what I and other people had said at my home and accommodation in Oxford. So people at work repeated verbatim words which had been said in my home, and repeated what I'd been doing recently. Often the most trivial things, the ones from your domestic life, are the ones which hurt most. One manager in particular at Oxford continuously abused me for ten months with verbal sexual abuse, swearing, and threats to terminate my employment. After ten months I was forced to seek psychiatric help and start taking medication, and was away from work for two months. I spoke later with a solicitor about what had happened at that company; he advised it was only possible to take action if you had left the company as a result of harassment, and such an action would have to be started very soon after leaving. Over a year later the same manager picked on another new worker, with even more serious results; that employee tried to commit suicide with an overdose as a result of the ill-treatment, and was forced to leave his job. But he didn't take action against the company, either. Abuse at work is comparable to that elsewhere in that tangible evidence is difficult to produce, and the abusers will always have their denials ready when challenged. And even if a court accepts what you say happened, it still remains to prove that abuse causes the type of breakdown I had at the end of 1992. In a recent case before a British court, a former member of the Army brought a case against others who had maltreated him ten years previously. Is there any evidence that there is a single source, as opposed to a loosely based "whispering campaign" amongst many people? Even if there is a single source, is there any evidence that "they" are professional "buggers" as opposed to amateurs, or perhaps people working for a privately funded organization? a) As to the question of a single source versus something more fragmented; it is quite obvious that there is a single source from the way the campaign has been carried out. Since things have been repeated verbatim which were said in my home, there must be one group which does the watching and listening. Since on several occasions (mainly during travel) people have been planted in close proximity and rehearsed in what they were to say, it follows that someone must have done the planning for that, and again a single source is indicated. b) So why couldn't it be amateurs? Why couldn't it be a private organisation, for example a private detective agency paid to manage the campaign and undertake the technical aspects? Some detective agencies are unscrupulous as has been proved on the occasions in the past when they've been exposed or caught; they too can have access to the bugging technology deployed; and there are reported cases of MI5 paying private eyes to do their dirty work (against peace campaigners and similar enemies of the state) on the understanding that if they were caught then they could deny all knowledge. Why couldn't that be the case? The main factor pointing to direct security service involvement (as opposed to amateurs or MI5 proxies) is the breadth of their access to the media in particular, and the fact that the television companies are so involved in the campaign. The BBC would not directly invade someone's home themselves, since it would not be within their remit to allocate personnel or financial resources to do so. An organisation of their stature would not take part in a campaign set up by private sources. The only people they would take material from would be the security services, presumably on the assumption that if the cat ever flew out of the bag yowling it would be MI5 who would take the consequences. State sponsorship for these acts of psychological terrorism is also indicated by duration; support for over six years for a team of three or four people would be beyond the means and will of most private sources. The viciousness of the slanders and personal denigration also points to MI5; they traditionally "protect" the British state from politicians of the wrong hue by character assassination, and in this case are using their tried and tested methods to murder with words an enemy they have invented for themselves. And there are precedents. Diana and Hewitt were alleged to have been filmed "at it" by an Army intelligence team which had operated in Northern Ireland, these allegations were made by someone called Jones who had been on the team. His statements were denied by the defence establishment who tried to character-assassinate by describing him as the "Jones twins". Funny how if you tell the truth, then you must be ill, isn't it? Thought only communists behaved like that? They never show their own faces; they only work through proxies, in the media, among the public, and by manipulating people in the workplace. Since they do not declare their identity there is no evidence to initiate legal action against the security services or anyone else. The only people you can prosecute are the proxies and they will deny knowledge of any conspiracy. By repeatedly humiliating and abusing the victim, they induced mental illness. This is the worst form of human rights violation: making any statement of the harassment appear to be symptomatic of the illness which they cause through the harassment. That this can happen, and people collude by silence, is absolutely horrifying. From the beginning in June 1990 they set a pattern of harassment which they have followed without change for the last six years. They paint me as a "threat" to which people must "react" (shades of Nazi persecution methods), while simultaneously portraying their hate campaign on which they have spent over a million pounds of taxpayers? money as a "joke". The MI5 that breaks the law with the silent complicity of the police is the same agency that is now seeking a role in the fight against crime. To give you one example, in 1992 I was seriously ill, and a manager at work somewhat humorously said that "it wasn't fair" that people were bullying me. A few days later, I attended for the first time a clinic in London as an outpatient, and on my way out was accosted by someone who asked if "they had paid my fare", with emphasis on the word "fare". He repeated the word several times in this different context; that they should have paid my "fare", each time emphasizing the word. For two and a half years from the time their harassment started until November 1992 I refused to see a psychiatrist, because I reasoned that I was not ill of my own action or fault, but through the stress caused by harassment, and that a lessening of the illness would have to be consequent to a removal of its immediate cause, in other words a cessation of harassment. I also reasoned that since they were taunting me with jokes about mental illness, if I were to seek treatment then the abusers would think that they had "won" and been proved "right". Remember, the constant theme of any persecution is, "we must destroy you because you're X", whether X is a racial or other attribute. In this case the X was "we persecute you because you have brain disease". The similarity of this logic to Nazi attitudes to the mentally ill is striking. The same manager who'd said "it wasn't fair" asked me in winter 1992 why I didn't seek help from a psychiatrist; was it, he asked, because "they would think they had won" if I sought treatment? That was something I'd never said at work... again, taken separately it proves nothing, but many such things over a period of months proves conclusively that people in the company knew what was going on, and in quite a lot of detail. Usually harassment in public lacks the level of finesse of "paying your fare". Most people's imagination does not go beyond moronic parroting of the current term of denigration. That is not surprising given the average level of the abusers; if they do not have the intelligence to distinguish wrong from right then neither will they have the capacity for anything other than mindless repetition of a monosyllabic term calculated to fit into their minds. The first incidents of verbal assault in public were in again in the summer of 1990, although they increased in frequency and venom with time. In July 1990 the first public incident occurred on a tube train on the Northern line. Two men and their girlfriends recognised me; the women sprang to my defence, saying "He looks perfectly normal, he doesn't look ill". Their boyfriends of course knew better, and followed the party line; one of them made reference to an "operation", apparently to work at the tube station but implicitly to a visit that I had made to hospital a couple of weeks previously. In August 1990 going home from college, soon after getting on a tube train at Gloucester Road I was followed by a group of four youths, who started a chant of abuse. That they were targeting me was confirmed by other people in the carriage, one of whom asked the other "who are they going on at, is it the bloke who just got on?" to which the second replied "yes, I think so". I was tempted to reply, but as in every other instance the abusers are enabled in their cowardice by physically outnumbering the abused; any confrontation would result in my being beaten up, followed by a complaint to the police that "he attacked us", and of course he's ill, so he must have been imagining that we were getting at him. Shitty, aren't they? But the shittiness of the four youths on the tube train is as nothing compared to the episode on the National Express coach to Dover in the summer of 1992. While going on holiday to the Continent I was verbally set upon by a couple travelling sitting a few rows behind. The boy did the talking, his female companion contributing only a continuous empty giggling noise. He spoke loudly to ensure other people on the coach heard, always about "they" and "this bloke" but never naming either the abusers or the person he was talking about. He said "they" had "found somebody from his school, and he was always really stressed at school". They must have dug deep to find enemies there; perhaps someone who dropped out of school, someone who didn't do too well later, who was jealous and keen to get their own back? The boy also said "he was in a bed and breakfast for only one night and they got him". By a not unexpected coincidence I had been in a B&B in Oxford a week previously, which had been booked from work; other things lead me to the conclusion that the company's offices were bugged for most of the 2 1/2 years that I was there, so "they" would have known a room in the B&B had been booked. (But I'll bet "they" didn't tell the company's managers their offices were bugged, did they?). After a few minutes of this I went back to where they were sitting and asked where they were travelling. The boy named a village in France, and the girl's giggling suddenly ceased; presumably it permeated to her brain cell what the purpose of the boy's abuse was. This and other set-up situations are obviously calculated to provoke a direct confrontation which would bring in the police, with the abusers claiming that they were the ones attacked. Again in 1992, outside the house where I was living in Oxford I was physically attacked by someone - not punched, just grabbed by the coat, with some verbals thrown in for good measure.     - USB Jump drive not assigned a drive letter hello, when I plug in any type of USB jump drive I here the bling blong sound and thatâ??s about it. I go up to the safely remove hardware arrow tool thing and I can see the USB drive their. I open Windows Explorer and I can not see the drive their (or on my computer) I go into disk management I can see the drive their but I am unable to manually assign it a drive letter, anyone have any ideas of what is going on?     - Vista Upgrade.... I'm quite confused over where excatly I stand on upgrading to an x64 version of Windows Vista. I purchased an OEM version of XP Professional X64 from ebuyer.com around June 2005. I built a new system and wanted it to be X64 based so I put on XP64, and everything has been fine and dandy, one of the main reasons I was sold on doing it then was because all the hardware I got had driver support and I was told I'd be future proofing my system for the new X64 version of Windows (which we now know as Vista). As far as i've been able to gather from what information there is out there, XP64 users cannot do an "upgrade" to any version of Vista, which I'm fine with anyway. However, there is mention of a discount for Windows 2K/X64 users which allow them to buy the full x86 or x64 Business Edition of Vista at the upgrade price. Now how excatly would we go about claiming this upgrade? I wanted to e-mail MS directly about this, but all the e-mailing seem to want to charge me for it! If anyone could clear this up it would be a big help, because i'd be quite annoyed if i didn't qualify for some sort of discount. I bought XP64 pretty much as soon as it came to market, and today not only do I see the very OEM version I bought over a year ago cheaper, but they now come with a Vista upgrade coupon that permit a discount. One of the primary reasons for moving towards 64bit operating systems is to increase the maximum amount of memory that can be installed on a system beyond the 4GB limit of 32bit machines. Experimentation has revealed that, despite the ability to install and configure much larger amounts of memory on these machines, attempting to use devices that perform large DMA transfers will cause undesirable behavior - primarily system crashes (BSOD, or blue screen of death). The issue is that machines with at least 4GB of RAM have access to 256 or fewer memory map registers. Map registers are required for DMA'ing data into the main memory of the computer. One register is required for each memory page. Each memory page is 4096 bytes. Thus, in order to DMA a 4096000 byte image, 1000 memory map registers would be required. Each map register consumes 4K from non-paged memory. The OS will allocate no more than a hard coded 256K to a device. Based on the current limitations of 64 bit Windows XP, a system with 4GB of RAM (256 memory map registers) could theoretically interface with a camera that produces 256*4096 = 1048576 byte images (1MB) without any troubles. Pending further qualification, it appears as though even this configuration will not work in practice on all 64bit platforms - problems have been observed with cameras with many different image sizes smaller than 1MB. This problem does not happen on 64bit systems with less than 4GB of RAM because the OS can address the memory with 32 bit DMAs via a set of "virtual" map registers. If this behavior is observed, the only short term fix is to reduce the amount of memory on the system in question to below 4GB. Spybot 1.4, Spywareblaster 3.5.1, and Pestpatrol 4 (an old version --
circa 2004 for the executable) run ... I use them regularly. Ad-aware
also runs.

I expect the former 3 might not hook into the 64 bit browser (which I
rarely use), but I have not had any serious spyware in a loooong time
so they must work OK. Not the most scientific analysis, but... ;-)

I only ever tried Ad-aware for a system scan.

For the record, all that Flyer mentioned are functional with x64, with
AdAware however AdWatch (the realtime monitor) is not functional in the
"lite" edition, you must purchase the Pro version, I have used it for some
time now with great success however. In addition, although slightly off
subject, Simply Super Software, http://www.simplysup.com/ has an offering
called Trojan Remover, this too is an effective tool, utilizing a startup
scan, which admittedly slows startup somewhat, and realtime monitoring, I've
used this program for sometime now as well and have a great deal of respect
for it.
