XP 64 and USB 2.0 Hard Disks
When I plug in my USB 2.0 Hard Disk into my XP 64 computer, the computer
detects the hardware, then BSOD. After researching the error code from the
BSOD, I found a Microsoft article that describes the error exactly, except it
is in reference to XP 32-bit. This was an issue on XP 32-bit, SP2 corrected
the issue, but apparently a similar fix has not yet been implemented into XP
64-bit. Here is the article: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=331988
When can we expect a fix for this issue?
Notes: the USB 2.0 Hard Disk works on the same exact hardware as mentioned
above with XP 32-bit installed and I verified the same issue occurs on 2
other XP 64-bit systems as well. Tag: Another one that works... Tag: 7554
Rant time...
This has nothing to do with x64, but since lots of the people posting here
build their own machines, I thought somebody here might be able to help.
My x64 pc resides in a huge PC Power & Cooling tower case. It's as plain as
you can imagine - a tall, very heavy duty white box with 8 accessible 5 /14
drive bays, a power switch and a reset switch. PC Power & Cooling now makes
only power supplies. Also, every time I have swap a peripheral out of this
case, I miss the nice tool-less features of lots of newer cases like
Enlight's.
Here's the rant: All the cases on the market today look absurd. I know
that it's what the hip crowd wants, but it reminds me of the line in the old
John Prine song "Looks like a 'lectric shaver now where the courthouse used
to be..."
Anyone able to recommend a capacious full tower that won't offend my stodgy
sensibilities of what a computer should look like? Tag: Another one that works... Tag: 7528

Does XP PRO 64 support 2 x dual core processors?
As per Microsofts: 5 reasons to go windows x64.
Under the sub heading: Multiprocessing and Multicore.
"Windows Xp Professional x64 Edition is designed to support up to two single
or multicore x64 processors for maximum performance and scalability."
Is this correct ? As I have read in the media that in Windows Server 2003
x64 the windows task manager will detect 4 CPUs (2 x Dual Core) as will the
bios. Is this only particular to Windows Server 64 as a Windows white paper
on x64 states that XP PRO x64 can only support 2 CPUs . Does XP PRO x64 deal
with multicore in a different way?
I would like to put together a 2 x Dual Core Opteron workstaion with XP PRO

me.

I install my web cam on C because of compatablity issues and it works very

Sharing an XP printer with x64
With x64 up and running I'm very impressed with it. However, I suffer from

If I were to set up another computer as a "Print Server" running 32 bit XP

Webcams for X64
Has anyone found a web cam that works under X64?
Polycom's PVX conferencing software will work under X64, so Polycom
support tells me, but there have to be drivers for the web cameras. I
know that Creative is promising some in the 3rd or 4th quarter but I
would like to know if there are any out there now. One of the
compatibility sites suggested that the IBM PC Camera worked under x64,
but since those camera's (Xrlinks I think) didn't work well under XP
anyway, and since there is no site for drivers, I am a little skeptical
of the claim.

SDLT 600 tapes are not usable
I have a server running Windows 2003 standard server with a SCSI SDLT 600
tape drive. I can use the driver that comes with Windows and the drive
works fine, passes all diagnostic tests. But it won't put the media into a
usable media pool so ntbackup will use the tapes. The tapes are added as
unknown media and marked as read only in that media pool. I cannot move the
tapes to a different pool as I get an error that the tape is not writeable.
Is there a way to manually configure the RSM so it has the correct tape
drive paramaters? The drive works and tests to read and write directly
using the manufacturer's diagnostics. But it won't write with backup as the
tapes are not being placed in a usable media pool.
Any help would be appreciated.

AMD64 processors
I'm looking at changing the MB and proc on an HP Pavilion that I have. I've
been looking at AMD Athlon 64 procs, but am a little confused now. I'm sure
the smart people on this NG will be able to clarify this for me.
It appears that AMD has Athlon 64 procs in socket 939 and 754. What is the
difference and which one is better?
Also, would it be better to go with an Opteron or stick with the Athlon 64?
I'll be using the desktop for business mostly with approximately eleven
applications at any one time running simultaneously and two of them are
graphics intensive. Opterons run all the same apps that Athlons do, right?
Opterons aren't like Itanium procs that have be written specifically for it,
does it?

Anyone know how to change the latency settings for either video card or sound
card in x64 registry?
I did a search for latency but nothing showed up under either my nVidia FX

I don't have access to latency through my BIOS and this seems to be the
underlying problem in getting good sound.
System sounds, e.g. Windows logon, etc. work fine. If I change the driver
in my video edit software to the ASIO driver and increase the latency then
wave files play correctly. If I try to play an mp3 or wave file using eithe

x64 will not install
My follow-up from Hitachi re the fact that on my system I cannot get the
system to recognise the drive on return from Text mode.
We have run into a few things that need to be mentioned while researching
this issue. The operating system you are using is still in the beta stages
which means there are most likely still some issues that need to be
addressed. Hitachi GST has also not tested XP64 with any of our drives at
this point so we cannot guarantee how well the drives will perform with
that version of the operating system. We have also not yet tested your
motherboard with the T7K250 drive to verify compatibility. That aside, we
continued to research the issue you are experiencing.

X64 on Acer 5002 aspire laptop
I just got this laptop today (really cheap too)
http://global.acer.com/products/notebook/as5000.htm it has an AMD 64 ML-30
turion processor at 1.6ghz but it comes with windows xp home. I was a bit
skeptical when I bought it because nobody seemed to be using xp64 on it. The
80gb hd comes in two fat 32 partitions, I installed xp64 on the second one
(converted to ntfs). Installation was smooth and uneventful.
The hardware on laptop was
broadcom 802.11g network adapter -> still searching for drivers
Realtek AC`97 audio -> I found and installed the 64bit drivers
Texas Instruoments PCI-1410 cardbus -> drivers installed by xp64
Sis 900 based pci-fast ethernet -> drivers installed by xp64
Slimtype DVDRW SOSW-833S -> drivers installed by xp64
SIS M760GX (graphics) -> to my surprise sis had a 64bit driver for it! yay
:) http://www.sis.com/download and follow the step by step.
Agere Systems AC`97 modem -> don't use it, so don't care.
