    - Trouble running trial version setup Hi - this is my first post here. I am having trouble running XP Pro 64-bit trial setup. I had downloaded the ISO from Microsoft, and burned it onto a CD-ROM. Ran the setup from boot, and the setup program goes through its process loading the drivers and whatnot that is needed for setup. However, after it's done loading everything needed, the setup program reboots my machine - I didn't get a chance to choose where I wanted to setup the OS, or whatever. From what I can tell, the program reboots after the message "loading Windows NT file system" or something like that - can't be absolutely sure, as it only appears very briefly. I don't see any kind of error message, either. I've tried re-downloading the ISO, thinkning I had a corrupt download, but the 2nd one I got is the exact same size as the original, so I don't think this is the problem. I don't think I have a corrupt burn either - otherwise setup wouldn't run in the first place, right? Nevertheless, the program I used for that didn't give me any error, either. The hardware has been working fine since Day 1 I got this machine 2 years ago. I have checked with the manufacturer of my motherboard for a BIOS update I seem to already have the latest - last updated back in May, 2006, so I don't think it's an issue with that. I have heard some having trouble with Raid support, but I have this disabled in my BIOS as I don't have a need for it. Sorry for the long post, but I wanted to make sure I covered the common problems first. I would really appreciate any input. Here are my specs: Motherboard: MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3800+ (this *should* support the OS) Memory: 1 GB DDR 400 Hard Disk: I have 2 - 1 SATA 120 MB drive (Western Digital, has 32-bit XP Pro), & 1 IDE 6 GB drive (Quantum Fireball - this is the drive I intend to install the 64-bit trial - it's empty) Tag: 32-bit or 64-bit Tag: 52244

    - I can't delete a folder on my desktop When I renamed a folder on my desktop, instead of typing in a word, I typed "Alt+255". This makes the text disappear. This also makes the file hard to delete. I can't delete the folder. In command prompt, if I try to delete it, it says "The syntax of the command is incorrect." I also tried "del *.*" in the command prompt, but this only worked for other things in the prompt. I'm not sure what to do, and would appreciate your advice.     - DEP Data Execution Prevention (exclude List) in vista 64 I have excluded some programs by putting them in the exclude list. When I remove them with remove button & apply settings they all re-appear when I close then re-enter. How do I remove items from the exclude list? This happens even if I hit apply & re-boot.     - USB devices diplay I'm wanting to reformat a USB external drive. I have just installed the 64bit Home Premium version of Vista on a newly built system and I guess I'm just going to have to ask some questions until I learn some things on this version. I want to use a USB external drive that currently is formatted in Linux. When I plug it in and go to 'computer', it shows Devices with Removeable Storage (3) and physically shows three devices; Drive D: my master DVD drive, Drive E: my slave DVD drive, and Drive F. However, when I right click on drive F, and then cklick on Properties>Hardware, it lists both of my DVD drives, my printer, my external drive, and both of my hard drives.     - Something strange going on with Windows X64 Pro and Nvidia Network Controller. Hello, When trying to send udp packets with a random payload size between 0 and 65000 windows only sends little packets ? The udp packets are not fragmented properly... at least according to ethereal... Could be a windows x64 stack bug, an ethereal/winpcap bug or maybe it's my program at fault. Really weird.     - Media Center Corrupted Recordings Lately, two of my recordings (same show, same day of week, and same time) have come out corrupted. It has only been those two recordings (out of hundreds). When I try to play them I get a black screen and possibly an error message. If I click stop and try again enough times I eventually get the "Resume" option instead of "play". If I click "Resume" the video plays just fine unless I try again from the beginning. What is going on here? Is there a way to fix this?     - WoW! continued I cannot believe my luck. So far everything's working. Adobe CS2 installed and updated without a hitch. I'd read somewhere that InDesign wouldn't work but mine does. And, as if that were not enough, I popped a Goo Goo Dolls DVD into the player and it works. I'll go away now and get back to my design task(s).     - Print Server Migration 32bit to 64bit I have 300+ plus printers that need to be moved over to a 64bit 2003 Server O.S. What would be the easiest way to tackle this? Should I focus on importing all the printers to the new server and then go through the process of adding drivers for each printer? From what I've read, printmig.exe is not the correct tool to use for migrating from a 32bit os to a 64bit os. Would using printmanagemnt.msc from a Vista machine do the trick?     - Autoplay corrupted in XP x64 I have tried everything: searching on the web for ways to repair this: with the gpedit.msc command, with programs to repair (Microsoft only has a repair autoplay program for XP 32-bit)... I even used my XP x64 CD to repair the installation and the autoplay function is not working. I have access to my DVD/CD drive, but for the USB flash drives it's worse: It's partially recognized by XP x64, because the 'Safely Remove Hardware' button appears and using 'manage' with right-click on 'My Computer' and going to 'Disk Management', the drive is there, but with no letter assigned to it and when I try to 'Change Drive Letter and Paths...', nothing happens.     - Fax Hi , I am having a peculiar problem with my Win XP x64. I installed the fax services, and when i try to send a fax, it does not go, it remains in out box. I went to help file, there it asked me to check if local services were on, i checked that too, it is on, no problems there. The modem i see in device manager is SOFTV92 Data Fax modem with Smart CP. There is no problem with the modem as i checked using DIALER to call my other number and i am able to call my other number. I am also able to use 3rd party fax software like VentaFax.     - windows 2003 server r2 x64 installation problem I am attempting to load Windows 2003 Server R2 x64 Standard edition on a brand new server (2.4ghz Xeon processor with EMT64). I am using the version of software from the MSDN package. When I boot from CD and the options to install the O/S show up, I am not given a choice to load the x64 edition only the Standard edition with no x64 designation which I must assume is the 32bit version. I am wondering if I should see an x64 designation on the option screen when choosing to load the O/S. If I am, I cannot for the life of me figure out why I am not given this option from the boot/load menu. Is it possible that some other bootable cd must be made for this version from the MSDN cd?     - How automate to setting Priority and Affinity for specific apps. Hi Group, I have a very CPU intensive program((AutoCAD 2007)which is not a multithread app.), and I notice when I go in to Task Manager(on a Quad Core System) and set Priority to High and Affinity to CPU 2 and CPU 3, that I get better performance. However, currently when I change the above settings I do so each time I open AutoCAD. Does anyone of a way to have these assignments automated? My first thought was using command line switches for the icon, but I can't seem to find any help. Second question; does anyone have a link to all of the command line switches for non OS .exe's?     - How to find new 'Patch Tuesday' patches? It looks like I made a huge mistake. Yesterday was 'Patch Tuesday' for October, and instead of carefully looking at everything that would be installed, I just opted for the express install. The headphones work and the microphone is plugged in the right port. I've checked all the sound settings and can't find any reason that it wouldn't work. I've tested it on another system and it works fine. I have Windows XP Pro. 64bit Edition, and a Shuttle SN25P system with a VIA Vinyl Envy24PT PCI Audio Controller. As best I can find I have all the latest drivers. I just have the normal Sound in Control Panel and nothing is muted. Audio/Sound Recording has Mic selected under Volume and with it set at the top. Sound/Volume/Device Volume/Advanced -- lists a large range of volume controls but the only Advanced is under Mic. Which just has Bass/Treble greyed out and 20dB Boot and Set To Front Mic, both selected. I've tried it with each/both unselected also. I've tried testing the mic with Sound Recorder but have gotten nothing. I've also tested with HL2:Insurgency Mod with the Voice enabled. Voice recording has a Hardware test but that always gives a network error saying "There are no suitable networking devices installed." "Windows cannot execute DpvSetup.exe, use Add/Remove Programs control panel to install." I have the lastest DirextX drivers. "DxDiag" / 64bit / Network / Direct Play Voice Options / Run Wizard - "The DirectPlay Voice Wizard failed with error code 0x80158320." "DxDiag" / 32bit / Network / Direct Play Voice Options / Run Wizard - Puts me to a screen asking me to test my mic by speaking the stated text, while doing so nothing changes and if I hit the volume button it gives the error "Windows cannot execute SndVol32.exe, use Add/Remove Programs control panel to install." and trying to go to the next page stops the wizard as my mic hasn't picked anything up. I've looked at the MS KB and carried out the instructions about changing the registry DWords to 3/3/2 respectively and nothing has changed. My brother has the same sort of system and same OS and can't get a microphone to work either. I've also posted in the VIA Arena and PlanetAMD64 forums and emailed Shuttle without any resolution.     - Bass redirection solution for SoundBlasters in Vista Bass redirection is that beautiful feature that allows you send all the rich sounding lower frequencies to that ".1" speaker making those bass sounds deep and giving music you know, that "punch". From the very start with their Vista drivers, CreativeLabs crippled their control panels in the sense that the "bass redirection" option was no longer available. Lower frequencies were sent to the other tiny 5 speakers tending to give a "flat" sound. I've been searching for a solution for many months. The workaround, not the subject of this post, I had until today was mapping the speakers in Media Player Classic. Today I found this CreativeLabs application in their Vista forums that did the trick http://forums.creative.com/creativelabs/board/message?board.id=Vista&message.id=25849 for the lower priced SB 24bit, Audigy SE, Audigy LE and probably others (try it at your own risk).     - WoW! That was too easy... I took some good advice and chose to donate most of my HP rebates back to Bill for a copy of Vista Ultimate 64-bit. Perhaps some of you will remember my ranting and raving about how my new HP-OEM (m8124n) didn't come with the 64-bit DVD. Oh well, I got over it and tonight I installed Ultimate 64-bit without a hitch... I opted to let Vista Ultimate take some GB's from (C:) to create the new partition (J:). After 47 updates I'm live and this is my second transmission via mail... Sure, I haven't tested all of my hardware yet but hey, what the heck, I can always shut down and load x86 if I'm in a pinch for whatever aint workin'...     - OT - Bloatware Nero 8.1.1.0b released Nero has a newer version 8.1.1.0b. http://www.nero.com/eng/downloads-nero8-trial.php After a few days of having released 8.1.1.0, they now have 8.1.1.0b No changelog is available. Will they have fixed the massive sidebyside errors I had in event viewer when testing the trial? I will just sit back and relax, and keep running Nero 7.     - 64 bit versus 32 bit RAM Two questions: 1)I have Vista 64 bit, I wanted to see if it could be converted or reloaded to the 32 bit with the OEM version I have, but from prior questions it seems that there is no way to convert the 64 bit versio to the 32 bit version, unless somebody knows a way. 2) If I do reinstall and go with the 32 bit versioin, I have heard there is problems with that version supporting more than 2 GB of RAM, I now have 4 GB of DDR2 in my system.     - Missing User Profile! I tried to log in and I'm getting a message that the User Profile can not be loaded. No one has used my computer since I last shut it down. I'm using Vista 64 and I have 2 profiles, my main admin profile and my sons profile that is under parental control. My main profile is not loading and when I try to do any sort of admin function under my son's profile it asked for my password to get my admin rights, well that doesn't work.     - I can't delete a folder on my desktop I created a folder on my desktop, and when I went to rename it, I pressed "255" while holding the ALT key. Doing this makes the name blank. You can pretty safely bet it's 32 unless you specifically asked for a 64 bit
version.

But if you go to Control Panel/System it will tell you the "System Type"
which is either 32 or 64 bit.
