    - all internet applications crash at start up I've been using Vista 64bit for a couple months now and yesterday i started up my pc and i noticed that every internet application that i use, doesn't work anymore. Some programs as example: internet explorer 32bit, firefox 32bit, firefox 64bit, utorrent, windows live messenger, windows media player, winamp .... The only program i can use is Internet Explorer 64bit. The last time i use my pc i didn't install/change anything. Windows error reports: Firefox --> error unknown Watson client--> error unknown Live messenger --> error with "ntdll.dll" uTorrent --> error unknown Internet explorer --> error unknown I've searched other forums where people have the same problem but nobody seems to have an anwser.     - Vista Ultimate 84 bit ant .NET 1.1 I note on the following page, that XP x64 is in the compatibility list, but there is no mention of any Vista x64 version. I assume that it is not compatible (because it displays a message saying so).     - Time Warp? Hi, Earlier this week my machine forwarded the clock one hour - I assume in respons to the US DST. I have not been able to reset the time - I'm in Denmark and our local DST happened this morning, when the clock was promptly forwarded another hour. I have the router set to recieve a timing signal - it only accepts a signal from the mivrosoft NTP server, at the moment I am a bit confused as how to resolve this predicament, as it doesn't happen often enough to leave any lasting experince.     - ISScript error on Windows X64 i'm trying to install a program from an MSI file but get the following error: "The InstallScript engine on this machine is older than the version required to run this setup. If available, please install the latest version of ISScript.msi" the only versions of that i could find were 8 and 9, both of havn't helped. i have SP2 installed with .net3. is there a later version of isscript or a way i can extrac the msi file?     - MP3 problem New problem. Yesterday MP3's would play with any player I have. Today they won't play on any player. Volume meter shows rises and falls in volume so it would appear that it is reading the files properly, but no sound to the sound card. Convert the mp3 to wav files and they play on any player. Uninstalled and installed newer codec files. No change. Unfortunately there was an update applied between yesterday and today and the Restore Point won't work, as won't the next previous one which was installing the Word PDF converter. Before I go back to where the Network problem was fixed, I thought I would see if anyone here had any better ideas. So far in the 3 weeks I have had Vista64 Ultimate RTM installed it has been an unpleasant experience. RC1 had no problems for me and is still working great on the other computer.     - 64/32 network Has anybody tried to set up a network between computer running WindowsXP x64 and a computer running WindowsXP Home edition ? In my case Internet sharing works fine but I cannot get file and printer sharing to work. Ping between these to computers works OK (address or name) but none sees the other on the network. Strangely enough file and printer sharing between computer with WindowsXP x64 and a 32 bit computer running Linux Ubuntu works OK although WindowsXP 64x also does not show Linux computer on the network.     - HELP PLS! Using Partition Magic 2 Try 2 Install WinXP x64 on Top of XP 32 PLEASE HELP!! Trying for months & give up, retry again etc. OK, I have XP Home 32 originally installed on puter. I Used Partition Magic 8.0 to try installing a 2nd OS (XPx64) on a newly created partition. First partition is 110 GBs my new partition is 30 GBs. Hard-drive 160 GBs. I follow the printed directions & I boot to new partition, it tells me its the wrong disk but when I press any key to boot from CD, all starts well. I get the blue setup screen & it starts installing the various drivers etc & finally gets to a place that informs me that "Windows will now restart" but it never does. It just sits there waiting to reboot or restart. I try restarting manually but it just re-installs drivers until it gets to "Windows will restart" again!! I am going nuts! I contacted Symantic Support but they said I have to have x64 installed first to add XP32 but I have read here & been told that "NO, it's XP 32 first & then u can load a partition with XP 64." So Symantic is misinformed!     - Nero SmartStart, still a "frame" Newer version of Nero (7.8.5.0) has still the same problem as v7.7.5.1 with its Smartstart application. Launch it, and you will only see a "frame". Just the frame of a window but nothing inside, like a transparent window. You can see your desktop through it. Has anybody else this problem? Has anybody a workaround?     - HP Vista Ultimate OEM 32-bit to 64-bit Has anyone heard of getting an OEM computer/notebook, HP in particular, having an option to go from 32-bit to 64-bit without having to reinstall the whole OS.     - System Files unable to Defrag after SP2 for Xp64 I was doing a clean install and suddenly am having an issue with fragments unable to be defrag'd. The first time we went through it the issue occured in the WOW64 emulator, and thing s we're chugging a little. So I deleted the partition, formatted and installed. Everything looked cool until it was time to install SP2. Then again with the files. This time it was something to the effect of Windows\documentsand settings\SysEvent.Evt. Im sorry, I forgot the exact name on the kitchen table at home and im landlocked at work for another hour or 2. Another file with a reference to IE5(ie5? huh?). So, I guess the true question is there any way to get these files to actually defrag or am I stuck doing a full reinstall because its affected a system file. Performance, appears to have taken a hit but more to the point this is a brand new pristine system. Its been working well for about1.5 months, this tear down and rebuild was more of an exercise for me than anything else until this occured. Will post the file names as soon as I get home. Thanks in advance for any help. :) P.S. The rig: Evga 680i SLI mobo E6600 2.6 Duel Core 4 gig DDR, 800, Duel Channel Raptor X 10K 150 Gig HD 8800GTX X-Fi All except the sound card are out of the box begining of Feb and have been running like a dream, its only during this reinstall these files, unable to be defrag'd, have cropped up. Somone actually said that I should just run the defrag until im blue in the face and it wll get it eventually but I really want to understand what went/is going wrong if possible.     - How to enable write-back disk cache? I'm using XP64 Workstation with 4GB memory installed, and I'm disappointed that its write performance is so poor with large writes. I'm used to testing on Windows Server 2003, where it will happily cache GBs of dirty data and write to disk when it gets a chance. I've tried enabling all the performance options but no dice.     - 32 or 64 bit OS for laptop? I'm a bit confused on when Vista is 32 bit and when it is 64 bit. I want to buy a new laptop computer and am looking at machines with Core2 duo processors and Vista business edition. However, is this a 32 bit OS? Does one have to move up to enterprise to get 64 bit? Is it worth it? I am an underpaid academic on a tight budget but I expect to use my laptop for at least three years and I use it for lots of fairly high level computing such as data base work and graphics. . For this reason, I want to get a laptop that has enough power to keep me going for a while. Any suggestions on the right OS would be appreciated. (And if anyone wants to recommend a good laptop, I'd be interested in that as well, though I realize that isn't what this Discussion Group is for, so that isn't essential to this question.)     - atapi.sys i need to chance my old win2000pro, just downloaded xp pro 64 bit trial SP1, while copying system files from cd getting atapi.sys caused error at line 32xx, 4096.     - samsung ml-7050 printer driver on X64 I changed routers and had to reinstall my print server. I got the router set up to find the print server, which works just fine. It's an Axis 5600. What I can't find are the drivers. When I built the system, I swear the driver was on there after I did the install. Can drivers be pulled from the x64 install disk? If you are familiar with Axis adaprinter, the program has no problem finding the printer. The older XP drivers for the ml-7050 will install (i.e. you can run the installation program), but the driver themselves won't install when you run adaprinter.     - Running Vista Ultimate 64 for about a month now...... Vista 64 RTM 6000 So Far: 2-Bsod both when logging off a user .......something to do with the win 32 kernel. Winmail will hang or lock-up with different errors with windows live.(when trying to post message) Event viewer log is loaded the error messages warning message. As far as I can see there is warning & error messages everyday since loading a month ago. PS This was a clean install with all updates applied as they come out. I Have been running Vista as my main OS for the last month,only booting to WinXP 64 or XP once in awhile. Wife hates (allowing) everything in EI 7 while she is surfing. We've developed an ISAPI dll and have built a "Multi-Threaded DLL" (/MT) x64 version with Visual Studio 2005, so it links with the installed msvcp80.dll and msvcr80.dll This works fine on our test machines (when the visual studio 2005 x64 redistributable package is installed), but it failed for a customer. depends.exe showed that it was finding x86 versions of msvcp80.dll and msvcr80.dll. There was a x86 SQL Server installation in the path, and even though a proper msvcp80.dll existed in C:\windows\WinSxS\Amd64... it picked up on the x86 version instead.     - Missing entry points in SHLWAPI.DLL on 2003 R2 (SP2) 64 bit I've a C++ COM DLL that works fine on 32 bit platform. It compiles & works fine on 64 bit platform as well, but when I try to register it with REGSVR32, it fails. Upon further check I found that couple of dependencies are missing. This is happening on 64 bit Windows 2003 R2 with SP2 machine. Linker flag "/MACHINE:X64" was set when DLL was generated. SHLWAPI.DLL is missing entry point #467 (does not display function name). DMWAPI.DLL is not present on the system at all. This used to work but one of the recent updates seems to have broken the dependency chain. I've seen many related posts but can't find any answer that works under this setup. (64 bit 2003 R2 machine with SP2).     - STOP MAKING 32bit VISTA I'm really getting sick and tired of software makers ignoring x64 coding. Why should they make them? They have no reason at all to. As long as Microsoft keeps putting out Vista x86, which supports cheap machines, there is no reason for them to venture into x64 computing. Makes me want to jump on the MAC bandwagon or pull my hair out. Such a waste for all these great new processors and still computing in the 90's.     - No UI on Vista 64bit startup I've recently built a PC with Vista Home Premium 64bit, its worked fine but I think I have managed to corrupt the keyboard and graphics drivers by turning off the PC incorrectly! Now when the system starts up you see the bios load and it confirms the config then the moving bar comes up showing that Vista is loading, then the screen goes blank. I know the OS is loading fine because it logs into MSN Messenger but there is no display and the keyboard and mouse don't respond beyond the bios. The keyboard and display work fine in the bios, its only when Vista loads that they stop working!     - How does one go about mirroring (RAID-1) the OS partition without third-party hardware/software? I'm running XP x64 on an ASUS A8N-E motherboard. Most of the 32-bit sofware hanging around will usually run on 64-bit Vista.
Just install it the "regular" way.
Main exceptions:
1.- The 32-bit application has a 16-bit installer. You will not be able to
install it.
2.- The 32-bit application needs a 32-bit driver installed. The application
will not work.
