I have been troubleshooting this issue for weeks now with no progress. When
a user navs to a website with a WMP video, he clicks the video link and get
the following message: "WMP was unable to locate this video file. Please
connect to the internet and try again." It's WiFi 802.11G connected and this
issue only happens on his system. I can hit the same site and view the video
with no problems.
I have updated and/or patched IE, Windows Media Player, XP, etc. No luck. I
have turned off UDP streaming. No luck.
Any ideas? I will also post in the WMP forum.

- MERGE FILES QUESTIONS
-
There are two questions here:
(1) I click Save As > another file with a different name.
Office comes up with a box that asks if I want to replace file, overwrite
file with changes, merge files. I click "merge."
Just *what* is this doing? The Help button is useless for information about
merging document files.
(2) After clicking "merge," four windows pop up: On the left, a long, thin
window showing (I guess) the changes made in the merge; a big window in the
middle showing the combined document; on the right, two boxlike windows
showing the two original files.
I closed the window on the left. But, . . . how do I get it back?
I tried going back to Square One (open document > Save As > choose another
file > select third option: merge). Nothing happened. The window did not
come back. In fact, nothing happened like it did the first time. All it did
was open up the other selected document, presumably, with the changes already
merged.
Once again, the Office Help function was as helpful as Clippy.

When viewing managers calendar in my outlook , sometimes an incomming email

- Creating trusts between W2K3 and W2K ad domains problem
-
i am trying to create a trust relationship between 2 domains, so i
started creating it from the w2k3 domain.
The actual process went fine, I created a two-way selective auth.
trust and validate it for both directions (INCOMING and OUTGOING). i
have the admin username and password for the remote domain so that was
all good. I can browse the remote AD from my domain.
Now on the w2k domain i have looked and the trusts and saw that they
were created successfully. I tried to verify the trusts and got the
"Information from the primary DC for the domain X (the w2k3 domain)
cannot be obtained because: RPC server is unavailable"
now i know there are some things that need to be in place for the DNS
resolution to work properly, but to the best of my knowledge that
stuff is done and working.
First, there is a conditional forwarder set up in the w2k3 domain to
the w2k domain and that resolution works fine.
I also have a forwarder set up in the w2k domain to the w2k3 domain
and that one is working fine as well.
according to some posts i read, there has to be a secondary DNS zone
in the w2k domain for the w2k3 domain, so i have also completed that
successfully as well.
however the problems still persists...same error message..
any help will be appreciated
thanks

- Design of a computer network solution for a given scenario
-
hi yeah,
will any one can get me some information about my query.
Introduction
Design and document a campus network that meets the requirements of a
company. You are expected to provide justification(s) for your
decision(s). The justification(s) will provide an explanation for the
options considered and the reason(s) behind choosing the selected
option(s).
Background
GraphicsWork is a graphical company producing graphics and animation
for the entertainment industry. The company is located in Windsor. It
consists of one building accommodating approximately 200 people. It
is networked and has 256Kbps Internet connection.
The firm is growing quickly and has recently acquired another company
in Slough. The new company has ten buildings in an industrial estate
area of Slough.
Different buildings and number of floors in each building are listed
below. No floor has more than 30 hosts.
Building Number of Floors
Building 1 4
Building 2 3
Building 3 3
Building 4 2
Building 5 4
Building 6 3
Building 7 4
Building 8 3
Building 9 3
Building 10 3
(Slough Campus)
General applications used are:
=95 Oracle database
=95 Microsoft Office applications
=95 File and print services
=95 E-mail
=95 WWW and HTTP
=95 Graphic packages
Graphicswork would like to network the Slough campus in an effort to
reduce cost and improve operational efficiency and network
management. The next phase of network implementation is to
interconnect the Windsor and Slough sites in an effort to share
resources, to allow easy communication between designers and artists
to increase creativity and productivity. The Design/Production
departments at the Windsor and Slough sites would like to be able to
transfer graphic files from one campus to another.
The Windsor site will provide Internet and e-mail access for both
sites.
The company wants to use Internet to gain clients and find new
opportunities. The company has already developed and tested its new
web server in preparation for the Internet access.
Requirements
=95 Design a campus network for Slough site with a networking
technology that is :
o Scalable to support future applications and expansions
o Reliable and fault-tolerant
o Easy to manage and has a response time of approximately 1/10th of a
second or less
o Cost-effective
=95 Use IP address: 172.10.2.0/21 to design and implement an efficient
hierarchical IP addressing scheme that can be summarised for the
campus network.
=95 Implement an appropriate IP routing protocol for the co-operative
network.
=95 Research latest/recent developments in WAN technologies and prepare
a technical report for the management. Recommend and document an
appropriate technology to interconnect the Windsor and Slough sites.

- Vista x64 and x32 activation status
-
Dear all,
I am ordering a custom-made PC and I will be getting an OEM version of Vista
Ultimate. Now the choice is mine if it is x32 or x64 I am getting. The x64
version has all the drivers for all the hardware I require, and also has the
option of accessing more than 4GB of RAM, which I am interested in. The issue
is that if I get the computer with Vista Ultimate x64 OEM and I activate the
copy, later down the line I may find that I encounter huge compatibility
issues that force me to revert to an x32 version. With x64 version's being
activated already, if I install x32 OEM Vista Ultimate (the system builder
told me he could provide me with the relevant DVD media) afterwards on the
same PC, with the same product key, will the activation still work? There
would be no hardware changes, but there would be a change in the Vista
flavour, from x64 to x32. I supose the underlying question is if the
activation takes into account BOTH the hardware components AND the Vista
flavour (i.e. x32 or x64), or just the hardware components? Any help would be
highly appreciated!
Best regards,

When I log into that machine with admin rights, IE behaves as expected

I checked the machine for viruses, spywares, ..., I defraged it, purged the

Any suggestions.

- shadow copy - only 1 copy appearing
-
Hi,
I have seen this problem a couple of times on windows 2003 servers even
though this is not a common issue (different clients). When I look at shadow
copies of a drive, I see only 1 copy. It looks like everytime it does a copy,
it deletes the old ones. I've checked the schedule, the quota,
deactivate/reactivate with default options, all the options, everything is
fine and even redoing the shadow copy configuration did nothing. If I do a
shadow copy manually, I now see 2 shadow copies. The one made by the schedule
and mine (I've done a couple manually and can see all of them). But at the
next schedule, I will see only 1 copy which is the last one made
automatically. The other automatic copy and the manual ones dissapearing.
I've also checked with the command vssadmin that everything is fine and no
errors in event viewer. On the server I am having the issue ritght now, I see
multiple copies for the C: drive but only one for the D: drive (so basically
don't have the problem for the C: drive). I have configured and used Shadow
copy a lot over the years and always use default values which is fine with me.
Any ideas?
Thanks

For some reason unknown to me, when my computer started up today, I got a
blue screen with the message: Windows Protection Error. Please restart your

When I restarted, the same message came up. The keyboard and mouse are
disabled, and i had to turn off the pc by unplugging the power.
I checked microsoft on another pc for this problem, and it listed a large
number of possibilites as the cause.
I did manage to do a thorough scan disk. Some errors were found and
automatically fixed. I then defragmented the drive.
When rebooting, the same message came up.
Does anyone have any hints for troubleshooting this? Thanks.

- Another SP3 upgrade failure and disaster
-
I'm running a HP P4 with XP Pro SP2. Nothing fancy, just a basic 2005
business machine with only a few application installed on it and all stock
hardware. Never gives any problem. I installed SP3 on it yesterday and
after a (seemingly) normal install, it rebooted and came up with SP3.
Then the problems began. First I noticed that the machine was virtually
nonresponsive taking ages to respond to any command except mouse movement.
Poping up the task manager showed that CPU usage was pegged at near 100
percent. A number of reboots did not fix the problem and other than the CPU
usage and nonresponsiveness, everything appeared normal.
I finally elected to uninstall SP3 and did a System Restore to the point
before the install. After unistalling SP3, system response returned to normal
and CPU usage was back down to about 3 percent. (Interestingly, at this
point the System page shows that the OS is SP2, as you would expect, but if
you go to Add/Remove Programs it shows that SP3 is installed. I didn't risk
trying to remove SP3 there since the system was now running normally again.)
So much for SP3; I'll stay with SP2 for the forseeable future!

- Small network, one pc inaccessible
-
I have a small network of just a few pc's here. I have various folders and
printers etc shared on each pc, when I go to view workgroups and places I
can see all the computers. Usually I can double click a pc to access its
resources but one of the computers always says it is not accessible or I
might not have permissions, access denied. This has happened to me a few
times in the past too and I've never been able to understand why or how to
fix it.
All the pcs are XP Pro and are in the same workgroup. I've tried connecting
by IP or hostname with the same results. I've even gone extreme and turned
off windows firewall on the one computer and it made no difference.
FYI, the one computer that is inaccessible to everyone can view all the
other computers just fine.
On another note, while I can access other pc's some of them take a REALLY
long time before anything happens. Sometimes the window seems to crash until
it makes the connection. Any help appreciated.

- SVChost.exe 99% CPU Usage with SP3 installed
-
Hello,
I recently installed SP3 on my laptop and desktop PC's running Windows XP
Home SP2. Everything was fine for about a week, but last night, both PC's
slowed till a standstill and became unusable.
The show an instance of SVCHost.exe using 99% of the CPU. I used Process
Explorer to narrow the problem down to the Automatic Update service. Stop it
and SVCHost.exe goes to 0% usage and System Idle jumps back to 99%.
I left the PC on today for 12 hours to see if it was actually downloading
something and might "fix" itself. After 12 hours, it was still using 99% for
svchost. No network activity light and no hard drive usage; just running the
PC full bore.
I knew this was a problem that happened to some people a year ago, and there
was a fix. However, wasn't SP3 supposed to have all those fixes. Why did
this start happenening on two different PC's at exactly the same time,, with
both having SP3 installed.
Also SP3 was installed from disc, not download and installed with no errors
on either machine.
Can anyone help me with a solution that will allow me to use automatic
updates, and not have svchost.exe use 99% of my CPU. With the problem, it
takes 10 minutes to open Explorer, or even 5 minutes just to get a command
prompt to come up.

that, but cannot get to upgrades on the 64 bit desktop - yet. This latter
had 'certificate errors' showing on several sites = Ebay, Paypal, etc, so
put them as trusted (Kapersky) and that worked.
Thanks for help,
roj

- Win XP Repair stops installing at unsigned driver (Sigmatel)
-
I am running the WIN XP OS repair on 3 year old installation on my Dell
5100C. Everything is fine up until it wants to load the Sigmatel Driver.
Then it asks for permission to continue, but since the mouse and keyboard USB
drivers are unloded (I checked by playing with my Mouse until it stopped, a
few seconds before the Sigmatel driver came up), I cannot continue. Ther is
no port for for PS 1 mouse.
What is the way to work around this? Is there a command line option for
forcing either the installation or ignoring of unsigned drivers?
Thanks and Regards,
Dewey

- Docx converter doesn't work on xp64/Word2003
-
Fully patched for everything as per Windows update. Have the converter
installed along with relevant updates. Tried the various tricks mentioned
here and other boards (e.g. re-install converter, re-install office, remove
.tmp/$ files, enable manual selection of file conversion, sacrifice a small
animal, etc....) - nothing worked.
Absolutely not a corrupted docx or a permissions issue as I have another
machine with the same version of Office but running XP 32-bit. Really, the
only difference is one OS is XP 64-bit, one is XP 32-bit.
Works just fine for PPTx and XLSx. Very, very frustrating.
Help?
Thanks.

PS.
Competely unrelated but why the big change in Office 2007 interface? I've
got one machine running that and absolutely hate it. Feels like I'm being
forced to use the mouse more than keyboard. I'm not just talking about
short-cuts. I find it MUCH faster to navigate through menus (up to 3 levels
deep) using the keyboard (alt-this, alt-that, arrow keys, etc...). Lift my
hands to go to the mouse just breaks my rythm. Maybe I'm just odd.

- Self-deleting macro button?
-
I have a macrobutton embedded in a line of hidden 'instruction' text.
The macrobutton works fine - But the hidden instruction line is no longer
needed as soon as the macro executes. What syntax can I add to the macro
button's macro, that will delete the entire hidden line, macro button and
all, as the macrobutton executes?
